ENGINE takes on Cooly Gold

The 2024 Shaw and Partners Coolangatta Gold, a legendary event celebrating its 40th anniversary, has cemented its place as one of Australia's most grueling and prestigious surf sports competitions. This iconic race has launched the careers of countless Ironman legends, including Guy Leech, Michael King, and Darren Mercer. Today, the event has expanded to include Ironwomen, masters, and youth divisions, showcasing the diversity and depth of surf sports talent.

A Fierce Battle for the Title

Over 1,000 competitors from across Australia and internationally converged on the Gold Coast to test their limits in this ultimate endurance challenge. The 2024 race was a thrilling spectacle, with athletes pushing their bodies and minds to the absolute edge.

Ali Day and Jemma Smith Reign Supreme

Ali Day, the reigning champion, once again proved his dominance, securing his tenth Coolangatta Gold title. His unwavering dedication and mental fortitude were on full display as he battled through challenging conditions.

“Winning is one thing, but turning up year in year out…whatever the conditions, whoever is doing it. I’m just really proud of the fact that I’ve mentally stood up every time and challenged myself. It means so much,” Day said.

Jemma Smith emerged victorious in the women’s race, showcasing her exceptional talent and determination.

“I just tried to keep focusing on me. I knew that if I got too caught up with where everyone was, that’s when you start to lose focus. I just really pushed the pace as much as I could. To be able to stand atop of the podium today, with Ali getting his tenth, is just insane. It’s so special to be able to do this alongside an amazing human being,” Smith said.
